Jose Antonio Vargas, journalist, filmmaker, and immigration activist, is calling the Philippines to pull out Pia Wurtzbach in this year’s Miss Universe beauty pageant after Donald Trump made insulting comments about Mexicans in his presidential speech.
“You don’t have to be a Mexican to be offended by what Donald Trump. I hope the Philippines, Bb. Pilipinas and Ms. Philippines pageant, pull out of the Miss Universe pageant as a sign of solidarity. I know that some countries are doing that,” Vargas said.
“We have to stand in solidarity with the Latino community, the Mexican community about this,” he added.
Earlier, organizers in Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico have also withdrawn from this year’s contest.
During the announcement of his candidacy for president on the Republican ticket, Trump said: “They are bringing drugs. They are bringing crime. They’re rapists,” referring to Mexican immigrants. “Some, I assume, are good people,” he added. He also suggested building a wall between the United States and Mexico.
