The 2007 OTWOMD Christmas Tree Blog Parade

by AMBO on December 10, 2007

The Christmas Tree is a mandala, a bundle of symbols showing what creation has to offer: light and the movement of angels, the gifts of orchard and field, forest and sea, all topped off by the star that pointed to the end of the journey, the place of peace.

During Advent in the XIth century, scenes called mysteries, including one about Paradise, were very popular. A tree decorated with red apples symbolized the tree of Paradise. During the XVth century, the faithful began to put up trees in their own houses on December 24, the feast day of Adam and Eve.

However, the first Christmas tree as we know it, but without lights still, appeared in Alsace in 1521. It was introduced in France by the Princess Hélène de Mecklembourg who brought one to Paris after her marriage to the Duke of Orleans. In the XVIIIth century, the custom of decorating a Christmas tree was well established in Germany, France and Austria.

In 1841, Prince Albert (originally from Germany), husband of Queen Victoria, set up a Christmas tree at Windsor Castle in England. From the royal court, the custom of Christmas trees spread quickly to the middle class and then to working people. For Victorians, a good Christmas tree had to be six branches tall and be placed on a table covered with a white damask tablecloth. It was decorated with garlands, candies and paper flowers.

In the Philippines, fresh pine trees are too expensive for many Filipinos, so handmade trees in an array of colors and sizes are often used. Star lanterns, or parol, appear everywhere in December. They are made from bamboo sticks, covered with brightly colored rice paper or cellophane, and usually feature a tassel on each point. There is usually one in every window, each representing the Star of Bethlehem.

Our Christmas at home is simple but looks elegant. We blended the yellow, green, white and gold colors from the tree, balls and ribbon. Our Christmas Tree has 800 lights and stands 11-feet in height. The whole family designed it. We hope you like it. Merry Christmas to all!

hi ambo thanks for the tag. I have a problem with this tag because our tree isn’t up yet. we’ve finished decorating the whole house but there is no tree yet. that job has always been my contribution yearly pero tinatamad ako this year. imagine lugging that nine-foot tree from the upstairs storeroom? yikes!

if I ever decide to put up the tree I’ll definitely do this tag, ambo. you know me, I don’t refuse tags but this one’s kinda different..

Great post. I’ve always like artificial trees myself. They’re easier to set up and they don’t make a mess. I use this stand and tree skirt called a tree keeper that unfurls into a bag, which goes around the tree when the holidays are over.
