Marco Torres a Pinoy Torchbearer in 2008 Olympics!
Yes, the Pinoy Torchbearer Marco Torres is now officially one of the 8 Expats in China’s Olympics torchbearers. Among others are from United States, Japan, Venezuela, India, Colombia, Germany and Russia. They are the eight foreign residents who will each carry the torch for 200 meters on Chinese soil next year.
The campaign was organized by Lenovo Group, the worldwide partner of the Olympic torch relay, with the help of China Daily, the country’s only national English-language newspaper. Some 262 people from 47 countries and regions vied for the eight available slots and another 245,000 voted with their mouse. Altogether, 1.5 million people comprising 156 nationalities visited the campaign webpage.
This demonstration of enthusiasm, creativity and sense of international community is consistent with the Olympic spirit, which cherishes the participation and unification of different cultures and peoples,” she said. “It greatly helped Lenovo increase its brand influence. The winners were chosen by a vote, but in order to be shortlisted they had to demonstrate their appreciation of Chinese culture and history and their devotion to communicating information about “the real China” to the rest of the world.
When i first published this campaign together with other bloggers, i was the 404th voter in the list and the Colombian National already gathered 4,475. A difference of more than 4000 votes. It seemed that miracle can only give Marco a chance to win.
Now, the miracle came true with the help of our Kababayans who supported Marco to pursue his endeavor and carry the torch with pride for our country. Indeed, the Filipinos made a tremendous support that Marco landing in No. 2 spot with a total votes of 13,342 headed by United States in No. 1 with 14,188!
I am sure Marco will be more grateful to all of the Pinoys who accompanied him from the beginning and winning of this fight. All praises to you Marco!
You made all the Filipinos proud of you! Congratulations!
A winless retirement for Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera (33) after the 12 round fight with Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (28) Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas, Nevada (Sunday Morning, Manila).
Before the main event, not to forget that another Filipino aside from Pacquiao made us all really proud by winning his title from Mexican Arturo Valenzuela known as Little Eagle “Aguilita”. The 2 round fight triumph of our kababayan from Sorsogon, Michael Farinas had an impressive round 1 and won by total knock out (TKO) in the second round.
Michael Farinas and Manny Pacquiao you are truly Proud Pinoy!
UPDATES: The recent voting for Foreign Expats for Olympic Torchbearers made our own Marco Torres in Number 2. See the results here. According to China Daily, eight (8) foreigners living in China will be chosen as prospective Beijing Olympic Games torchbearers next week. The eight will be selected from a list of the Top 100 candidates for the “Lenovo-organized Olympic Torchbearer Nominee Selection Among Foreigners Living in China. Aside from Marco Torres, there are 4 Filipinos who made it on Top 100. They are Jaime and Michelle Florcruz, Noel Novicio, and Jeremy Sy. Indeed these Pinoys make us all Proud! Let’s continue to pray that any five of them make it. Ang galing ng Pinoy!
I was invited by Lester Cavestany about his latest article, “Suportahan Ta Ka (Vote for Marco Torres as a Torchbearer in the 2008 Beijing Olympics)”. At first i was curious who’s this man named Marco Torres he’s talking about. As i go on reading, i felt so proud that this guy is nominated as a Torchbearer in the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics and knowing he is a Filipino. Marco Torres is living in Beijing for more than a year now and a marketer by profession. He is working for M Moser Associates, China’s number one design firm. As of this writing, we are too far behind a Colombian national with a total votes of 4,475, American and Australian who already gathered thousands of votes while Marco Tores with total votes of 404 (including me).
