Miriam Defensor Santiago Passes Away at 71


Miriam Defensor Santiago passed away on Thursday, September 29, her husband Atty. Jun Santiago said in a statement. She was 71 years old.

“She died this morning in her sleep, she was unconscious when she passed away,” Santiago said.

She died at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City, where she had been admitted for complications of her ailment.

The former senator disclosed in 2014 that she had stage 4 lung cancer.

Miriam Santiago ran for president in the May 2016 elections but lost to President Rodrigo Duterte. She also sought the presidency in 1992, won by Fidel Ramos, and 1998, won by Joseph Estrada.
