Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake in the Philippines October 19, 2015





Magnitude 5.4 earthquake recorded in Looc, Occidental Mindoro at 9:50 PM according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). It was felt at Intensity 4 in Tagaytay.

Phivolcs reported that the quake was tectonic in origin and had a “depth of focus” of 101 kilometers, but no damage is expected to result from it. Aftershocks are expected though.

The quake was also felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity 5 was felt over Batangas.
  • Intensity 4 – Tagaytay City; Puerto Gallera, Oriental Mindoro; and the cities of Mandaluyong, Makati, Pasay, ParaƱaque, and Muntinlupa in Metro Manila.
  • Intensity 3 – Clark, Pampanga; General Trias, Cavite; Malolos, Bulacan; Bacoor, Cavite; Obando, Bulacan; Agoncillo, Batangas; Talisay, Batangas; and the cities of Taguig and Quezon in Metro Manila.
  • Intensity 2 – Pateros; Manila; Antipolo City; and Lucban, Quezon.

Phivolcs added that the earthquake might be related to an activity in the Manila Trench.

“We think it’s related to the Manila Trench, yung subducted slab along Manila Trench,” Ishmael Narag, Phivolcs’ Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division chief, said.

Narag added that small aftershocks might be felt only in Lubang Island, where earthquake activity is common.
