Confirmed: Actress Liza Soberano is the New ‘Darna’

Kapamilya actress Liza Soberano will play the iconic role of ‘Darna,’ according to entertainment writer Ricky Lo on Philippine Star on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.

“This piece of ‘breaking news’ should put a period to the prolonged guessing game who the next flying woman would be, with names such as Kathryn Bernardo, Jessy Mendiola, Nadine Lustre, Pia Wurtzbach and even Sarah Geronimo thrown into the tambiolo,” wrote Lo.

‘The Kapamilya actress is now undergoing intense training,’ added the VDPA. ‘The training is being done in a secret place so that there won’t be any ‘leak,’ he added.

Soberano joins Angel Locsin, Anjanette Abayari, Nanette Medved, Sharon Cuneta and Vilma Santos who have portrayed the role of a super heroine.

Last March, actress Angel Locsin announced that she no longer can play the Filipina superhero Darna in Star Cinema’s movie adaptation of the Mars Ravelo-created character due to health reasons.

Darna was created by writer Mars Ravelo and artist Nestor Redondo. In her more popular incarnations, she is a deceased extraterrestrial warrior magically manifesting herself through a human girl from Earth, named Narda.

She first appeared in Pilipino Komiks. Darna is considered to be the most celebrated character in the Philippines.

Update: Liza Soberano confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with MJ Felipe on TV Patrol on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.
