Australian Wildfire Death Toll Rising

The Australian Wildfire killed at least 200 and left thousands of people homeless. The blazes have so far spared major urban areas but have swept across nearly 200,000 hectares of bushland in Victoria, leading some firefighters and police to describe the destruction as something of a holocaust. Also in the reports, two towns Marysville and Kinglake have been completely wiped out.

Blazes have been burning for weeks in the southeastern state of Victoria but turned deadly Saturday when searing temperatures and wind blasts created a firestorm that swept across a swath of the region. A long-running drought in the south – the worst in a century had left forests extra dry and Saturday’s fire conditions were said to be the worst ever in Australia.

Australia’s previous deadliest fires were in 1983, when blazes killed 75 people and destroyed more than 3,000 homes in Victoria and South Australia.

Unfortunately, among the victims are reportedly Filipinos. The Department of Foreign Affairs said at least two Filipinos died in the wildfire in Australia but declined to release their identities.

Meanwhile, the Australian Embassy in the Philippines posted on its website that concerned Filipinos who want to call their families and relatives can call Australian Red Cross hotline on +61-3-9328-3716

According to them. all the proceeds will go to the benefit of the victims.

I am now checking them out, and hope to find useful books for me.
