New Planet Super Earth Found

Super Earth is the newest planet found by Astronomers. Also named as GJ 1214b, is classified as a “super-Earth” because it is between one and 10 times as large as Earth.

“Despite its hot temperature, this appears to be a waterworld,” said Zachory Berta, a graduate student at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who first spotted the planet. “It is much smaller, cooler, and more Earthlike than any other known exoplanet.”

The new super-Earth was discovered using the MEarth project, a suite of small, ground-based telescopes set to detect minute changes in the brightness of dim, red stars known as M dwarfs.

“If you want to describe in one sentence what this planet is, it’s a big, hot ocean,” said Harvard University astronomer David Charbonneau. “We can even study its atmosphere. This planet will occupy us for years. That’s part of what’s so exciting about it.”
