Marco Torres a Pinoy Torchbearer in 2008 Olympics!
Yes, the Pinoy Torchbearer Marco Torres is now officially one of the 8 Expats in China’s Olympics torchbearers. Among others are from United States, Japan, Venezuela, India, Colombia, Germany and Russia. They are the eight foreign residents who will each carry the torch for 200 meters on Chinese soil next year.
The campaign was organized by Lenovo Group, the worldwide partner of the Olympic torch relay, with the help of China Daily, the country’s only national English-language newspaper. Some 262 people from 47 countries and regions vied for the eight available slots and another 245,000 voted with their mouse. Altogether, 1.5 million people comprising 156 nationalities visited the campaign webpage.
This demonstration of enthusiasm, creativity and sense of international community is consistent with the Olympic spirit, which cherishes the participation and unification of different cultures and peoples,” she said. “It greatly helped Lenovo increase its brand influence. The winners were chosen by a vote, but in order to be shortlisted they had to demonstrate their appreciation of Chinese culture and history and their devotion to communicating information about “the real China” to the rest of the world.
When i first published this campaign together with other bloggers, i was the 404th voter in the list and the Colombian National already gathered 4,475. A difference of more than 4000 votes. It seemed that miracle can only give Marco a chance to win.
Now, the miracle came true with the help of our Kababayans who supported Marco to pursue his endeavor and carry the torch with pride for our country. Indeed, the Filipinos made a tremendous support that Marco landing in No. 2 spot with a total votes of 13,342 headed by United States in No. 1 with 14,188!
I am sure Marco will be more grateful to all of the Pinoys who accompanied him from the beginning and winning of this fight. All praises to you Marco!
