Phillip Phillips, 21, from Leesburg, Georgia, has won the popular singing show “American Idol“. He was crowned American Idol Season 11 Winner on Wednesday night, May 23 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The runner up was awarded to Jessica Sanchez of San Diego, California.

On Tuesday, May 22, American Idol 2012 Top 2 performed three songs each. First round was a Simon Fuller’s choice, the second, favorite song of the season, and their winner’s song on the third round.

He performed “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King on the first round. Billy Joel’s hit “Movin Round” on the second and on the last round, Phillips got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges for his performance of “Home“.

Phillips is the 7th male “American Idol” winner, and the 5th consecutive male winner, after David Cook (Season 7), Kris Allen (Season 8), Lee DeWyze (Season 9) and Scotty McCreery (Season 10).

Who will be crowned as the next American Idol? The votes have been counted and the results are also in! 132 MILLION votes came in last night, according to Nigel Lythgoe. Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips performed three songs (Simon Fuller’s choice, favorite song of the season, and their winner’s song) on American Idol Season 11 Finale performance night on Tuesday, May 22.

First round featured a Simon Fuller’s choice, Jessica kicked off the singing competition with a Whitney Houston hit “I Have Nothing” while Phillip Phillips performed “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. Judge Jennifer Lopez calls him the modern day crooner, and noted the finale was a “battle of the opposites.” Randy Jackson said Jessica won Round 1.

Second round, contestants picked their favorite of the season, Jessica chose Celine Dion’s song “The Prayer” while Phillips “Movin Out” by Billy Joel. Randy Jackson announced a tie in Round 2, Steven Tyler gave it to Jessica, and JLo said it was Phillip’s round.

The third round, the winning song, Jessica’s performed “Change Nothing” while Phillip Phillips “Home“. JLo said, it was a wrong choice of song for Jessica. She said the young singer has more soul than what “Change Nothing” requires. Phillip received a standing ovation from the audience and the judges.
