Filipino boxer Mark Anthony Barriga scored the Philippines’ first victory in the London Olympics on Tuesday, against Italian boxer Manuel Cappai in the first round of the boxing competitions.
The 19-year old light flyweight from Panabo City repeatedly scored left straights and combinations from Round 1 to Round 3. The judges scored the first round, 5-2, for Barriga. The second round favored again to Barriga, 9-4. The third round was more of the same, ending the fight with 17-7.
“He showed a lot of courage and wasn’t intimidated by the height of his foe. We told him to come out firing and he responded,” said Barriga’s coach Roel Velasco.
With the win, Barriga advanced to the Round of 16 of the Olympics tournament. He will fight Kazakhstan’s Birzhan Zhakypov on Saturday (August 4) in the Round of 16.
