BLOOOOODDY SHIIITTTT!!! HATE IT! That’s why I am sooo damn careful in eating meat when travelling because I have no freaking clue what in the world is being served on me! I was gonna ask where is this in the Philippines until I heard her say “murag chicken!” meaning “it’s like chicken!” UGH!!!! This is somewhere in Iloilo!!!

OMG! This is definitely animal cruelty. Forget endangered species. I mean, the bat was still alive when it was thrown into the fire. I know that I wasn’t raised eating bats and if was, I would probably eat it too without screaming as I did just now while watching the video. I wouldn’t condemn this video if the bat didn’t jump off the fire and started squealing once it was burned alive. I wouldn’t watch the video again.

ay nagtaka ka pa kong bakit madaming gurls ang ayaw tumingin sa “how to fried your butt video”. mahina puso namin pagdating sa ganyan, hindi nga lang puso kundi pati na ang sikmura. beri emosyonal kami pagdating sa ganyang bagay. tingnan mo ko, di bat nag react kaagad na parang inahing manik?

I am a WWF advocate (hindi wrestling)… and i am against this cruelty. it’s much better to kill the bat in the natural way. there’s nothing wrong in eating it. it’s the way they killed the poor animal.
we do not throw a live fish on the fire nor do we burn chickens with their feathers on their body. It’s adding insult to the injury. Kakainin mo na nga pahihirapan mo pa.
animals have no souls, nor do they have cognition. they just act according to their instinct but it doesnt mean that they don’t deserve respect. Kung yun ngang mga picture ng mahal natin sa buhay eh ipinapaframe pa natin at nagagalit tayo pag binalahura, how much more are these bats that keeps the ecology in balance.
bats eat little snakes. they also eat insects. without the bats, pests such as “balang or locusts” would populate the earth.
Magagalit si Robin nyan sa ginagawa ni tabatsoy! Lagyan ko kaya ng mansanas sa bibig yan at date kaming dalawa sa pyestahan? hahaha

I always have difficulties when it comes to criticizing certain practices of other groups of people. Our value systems have been virtually replaced by those in the west and therefore it is very easy for many of us to feel appalled by such apparent display of brutality. We need to bear in mind that we still have traces of our foraging past, especially in remote places where the idea of large-scale domestication of animals for consumption (thankfully) has not seen the light of day (yet). In fact it is not these acts (which are remnants of the hunting and foraging age) that cause widespread ecological imbalance. If you go to remote areas where people are still engaged in hunting/gathering activities for sustenance, they have an intrinsic sense of when to stop and let a certain species recover before they hunt for it again. They only take what they need for the day, in the process allowing nature to heal itself.
It is the culture of over-consumption, the inevitable consequence of capitalistic tenets, which is the ultimate cause of ecological imbalances. Modern societies take a lot more from what is needed from the environment not just because they can but because high profit margins are equated with higher turnover of resources. I haven’t heard of any tribe hunting/gathering any flora or fauna into extinction but I’ve read about massive extinction of local species due to mining, over-fishing and clearing of forests for agricultural or other industrial uses. I don’t know how “civilized” people would react if someone could film how various species undergo prolonged suffering (much worse than being thrown in the fire alive) as a result of destruction of their habitats for commercial ends. So to cut it short, my take on this one is, pabayaan na lang kung paminsan-minsan lang naman. Pero kung maging talamak ito at maging street food na parang balot or one-day old, ibang usapan na yan.
Now about the suffering of the bat, that’s another issue, but then again it is basically our ethnocentrism that makes us feel sorry about it. From the perspective of an individual raised in a society where bats are likened to devils in hell, being burnt alive is perhaps the most apt way of killing the poor creature.

Mogli, thank you for bringing up your opinion on this issue. Wow talaga. I agree when you said that we still have traces of our foraging past, i like your idea. It runs in our blood, it remind us the shadow of our culture.
But i think the issue i want to clear, is the way she killed the bat. Kelangan ba talagang ihagis ng buhay sa apoy? Di kaya torture na yun? But Lenggai said, yun daw ang sabi ng mga katutubo. I don’t get the point too.
