The Philippine Delegates in Beijing Olympics 2008 (A Fight for Money?)

The Philippine Delegates in Beijing Olympics 2008 made a courtesy call to our President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on August 1, 2008. Wishing them goodluck and congratulations as well as encouragement to bring a Gold Medal for our country.

Hoping this would be the first Gold Medal from Beijing Olympics 2008. The Philippines has been participating in the World Games since 1924, but has come up with only nine medals and none of them gold.

In the history of our country, Mansueto ”Onyok” Velasco was the last to return home with a silver medal from the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

The Beijing Olympics 2008 will start from August 8 and will end on 24. We are sending 15 athletes who will compete in eight sports disciplines such as weightlifting, boxing, swimming, athletics, taekwondo, archery, diving and shooting.

Here’s the list of our athletes participating in Beijing Olympics 2008: They are Hidilyn Diaz (weightlifting); Henry Tanamor (boxing); Daniel Coakley, and Christel Simms (swimming); Henry Dagmil and Maristella Torres (athletics); Tshomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivero (taekwondo); Mark Javier (archery); Miguel Molina, James Wlsh, Ryan Arabejo, Rexel Ryan Fabriga and Sheila Mae Perez (diving); and Eric Ang (shooting).

Facts :
Eric Santos will sing in Beijing Olympics 2008
The President gave $1000 allowance per athlete
The Philippine Olympic Commission had announced that the athlete who wins the first Philippine Olympic gold will receive P10.5 million while the President added P4.5 million, a total of cash pot to P15 million

Thoughts:
For many years, our country is aiming for an olympic gold medal, but we always fail. Where do you think is the main cause of this failure? In our athletes or in the Philippine Olympic Commission? Did they provide enough facilities to train our athletes?

Do the Philippine Delegates in Beijing Olympics 2008 will fight for money or for our country? Does the government needs to offer money for success?

Kulang facilities sa education, sa sports and everything!
Tingnan mo, 15 lang ang masesend natin. I mean, I know na may qualifications yan kaya 15 lang pero bakit kailangan 15 lang?

    Correction lang po Ambo:

Si Anthony Villanueva po yata ang first Filipino Olympic medalist when he won a silver for boxing in 1964.

BTW, Arianne Cerdena won a gold in bowling in Seoul (?) pero demo sport kaya it did not count.

  13. malamang pag naka GOLD tayo unahan ang mga pulitiko sa NAIA! tama ba ako bro AMBO?! ;)

  14. monaco says:

This is what I think. the reason for our failure is the lack of a SPORTS PROGRAM. Hindi pwedeng kung kelan lang malapit na ang SEA Games at Opympics eh saka lang puspusan ang training at funding. Dapat it should be an ONGOING COMPREHENSIVE program at the grass roots level pa lang, from the barrios, the elementary schools, from the provinces. That is the pattern being done by other countries. Kahit ano pang incentive ang ibigay mo sa mga yan kung kulang din naman ang foundation, kulang pa rin!

Another thing: CORRPTION. Sa mga pulitiko lang napupunta ang funding.

  15. monaco says:

Let’s just hope for the best for these athletes.

  16. itot says:

add ko lng ambo, kpg tayo na maghohost ng olympics e bka todo suporta na sila gaya non nakaraan sea games stin.

I think this is a good way to motivate our athlete not just giving 100% but to give their 200% just to win our first gold. I hope maka Gold na tayo.
