After the Malou Fernandez story, here comes another issue from the Desperate Housewives.
Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.
MD: Well, everything seems normal. But, you say you’ve been having irregular periods?
Susan: Yeah, you know, one month off, two months on. That happens, right?
MD: Have you ever experienced night sweats? …. (few other lines here)
MD: How about hot flashes?
Susan: OK, whoa. I’m gonna stop you right there. I’m way too young for that, please refer to your chart.
MD: Susan, I know for a lot of women the word menopause has negative connotations. They hear aging, brittle bones, loss of sexual desire…
Susan: Before you go any further, can I check those diplomas? I would just like to make sure that they’re not from some med school in the Philippines…
I got this issue from Kengkay’s Blog and i’ve read this email from Jeannie Hizon
Dear fellow Pinoy Moms:
Last night, Desperate Housewives, in their season premiere insulted the Philippine doctors. I took it as an insult to all of us, and I am in this crusade trying to get our voice heard and our dignity defended, but i am just a stay at home mom watching a toddler who happens to be taking a nap right now.
Is there any of you who can get someone from the government to help us? I want ABC in the news, I want Desperate Housewives in the news, making an apology to the Philippine medical community, including the nurses, therapists, and caregivers, and to every single Filipino offended by their script. Can the Philippines sue ABC the tv network?
I want ABC to apologize to all Filipino mothers who are raising their children to be good citizens of the Philippines and other countries. We have children born abroad, children who moved abroad, and I can’t just sit down and watch a show insult all of us.
Whover can help, i appreciate it. Please reply to labanpinoy@gmail.com. That’s still me, i created the email address for this purpose.
Thank you and God Bless
Jeannie Hizon
The racist remark made by Teri Hatcher really insulted not only the Medical Schools in the Philippines but generally our educational system. An insulting comment which awakened all Proud Pinoy doctors not only those in the U.S. but in the whole world, to include our Nurses, Physical Therapists, and Caregivers.
To think that many Filipinos are part of the Health Care Professionals in the United States. To think that they’ve passed the quality standards for doctors in America. Then, all of a sudden we will hear these rude remarks for Filipino doctors? It’s really unfair. I don’t care if people would say that i am overreacting on this issue, i am not alone, i know.
I am personally bothered and angered by this unfair comment. How about you?
The Filipino Community deserves an apology. That’s it.
“If this is a call for another Malou Fernandez boycott, count me in!”

Boycott natin. wahaha. Discrimination na yang ginawa nila ah. It hurts, it hurts you know. Although I’m not fully against Teri Hatcher kc she’s only following the script. The producers and writers behind the show must be held liable and put to death by guillotine. hahaha. Aba, parang sa knila walang issue ang healthcare nila ah. Ukinenam!

Hi Ambo, yes it’s insulting and it’s not that easy to find the humor in it. I just hope that when the dust settles from this controversy, I hope we can reflect on our own discriminatory attitudes as well when it comes to schooling. Isn’t it true that in the Philippines, many applicants for executive positions are accepted on the basis of the school they graduated from? Who among us have not felt awkward with questions like, “Which school did you come from?” - usually asked by first-time acquaintances to strike up a conversation.
I am more than familiar with the attitudes of a few graduates of elite schools and universities who will only allow their children to interact or be friends with people of the same breeding and schooling.
Oh well, another wake up call for us Pinoys :-)
October 3rd, 2007 at 3:03 pm
this was really racist and as a proud successful pinoy this is very unacceptable.i no longer wish to watch this show.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:07 pm
This is so not FUNNY!!!!
Its best that the writers have reviewed this long enough not to INSULT any Race. What a SHAME to ABC on showing this one on Air.
October 3rd, 2007 at 4:29 pm
she really is a desperate!!! teri hatcher, may we know your educational background?

shame on you Teri Hatcher!!!!!!!!

nice way of knowing how many filipino viewers you have, and how many you have just lost.
although, actually i really don’t have very strong reaction with the dialogue albeit slighted for the insensitivity, we as filipinos however should also look into our sad state of education and how we have degenerated ourselves against the standards we admit that we have lost over two or three decades. studies show that the country now belongs within the lowest five in the asian countries alone when we used to be on top. not to mention the controversies that our education have gotten into i.e. the nursing scam, corruption in the education department, etc…
the world can’t help it but observe on these tracks majority of which is our very own doing. i think that most of us have recognized these as a weakness. it just hurts when other people outside of our ‘race’ will slap it into our faces then we claim it to be a ‘racial issue’.
October 3rd, 2007 at 8:59 pm
I bet all my life that ABC would have never in a million years let any of the characters say, ” I hope he didn’t get his diploma from a black or Hispanic college.” I can bet you my life on it. There will be a huge rally in the streets as early as the crack of dawn. However, it was all “A OKAY” for them to cast such comments about Philippines.
For those Filipinos who own Disney stocks, it’s high time to rethink about your financial interest/investments. Disney owns ABC, I’m pulling mine out.
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Personally, I think it reflects her character’s supposed ignorance more than it insults Filipinos. Besides, Teri Hatcher is part Filipino on her mother’s side. It wouldn’t make sense for her to insult her own people (partly). If fans of the show take the line literally, it shouldn’t have to be our problem as Filipinos, either. Ignorance exists, period. We just have to deal with it. Mga Pinoys talaga, lagi exag. Inferiority compplex at work nanaman.

Personal Branding
Or as a nation or race, we either receive preferential treatment or slur like the one made at Desperate Housewives.
Popularity: unranked [?]…

Here we go again! Another blow to the image of our nation. Well, peeps let’s just strive harder and show them that we are much capable than her countrymen!

(actress, whoever she is, insulted medskul in phil).. Ive seen the clip.. i dont think we should be bothered, if its not true then y dig on it.. “More talk, More mistake” definitely the actress in the series jst opens her mouth and talk without even thinking what the hell she uttered.. ( dumb pipol always do that ). well, she probably had her share of having a bad experienced with a filipino doctor.. Shs’s entitled to her own opinion and so are we.. Hmmm..
lets get even..
dumber than the dumbiest…

i also condone such kind of racial slur but i guess we should also evaluate our own attitudes towards Americans! eh tayo rin naman kase ang nagpupumilit na mag-migrate sa US! kaya ang dami-dami nang immigrant sa bansa nila.
not that it justifies the “joke” pero kung di ba tayo nagma-mass export ng nurses sa US, eh sasabihin ba nila yun?

October 5th, 2007 at 2:08 am
indeed, how amazing a nation who gained so much from our medical caregivers can be so heartless - - - - - the scrip writer, actors, directors, producers and the whole of ABC should be sued for this! go guys!!! ato ni silang ilansang
October 5th, 2007 at 4:51 am
i think it is not Ms. Teri Hatcher’s fault.. we should blame the writer.. it was scripted and as an actress she was just following the flow of the story.. ABC was careless to permit these kind of “lines/script”.. our country deserve a public apology..
October 5th, 2007 at 5:16 am
The ABC Network apologizes on the issue. But to some people it’s not sincere and they cannot accept it. Others want Teri to apologize. Others want to ban the show not only in the Philippines but the whole Asia.
If you were to ask, now that ABC apologized on the issue, what’s the best thing to do next? Are we going to keep our mouth shut? What’s in your mind?

“Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”
Don’t take it so serious. it makes sense. Because if someone who graduated from the med school in Philippines, can he/she be a Doc. in US??
of course not~~
he/she has to take another test for being a Doc. in here. so what? beside, the quility of med service in Philippines is really…”impressive.”
that’s why there are so many ppl have this sterotype.

I found an interesting perspective on the subject from another Filipino blog here:

Some food for thought to digest, certainly.

You ****, you cannot even separate Terri Hatcher from a character she plays. You probably think Fernando Poe Jr. went around beating up bad guys in his real life. It was a fictional character, not Terri Hatcher. Should actors apologize for playing a KKK member? Should an actor apologize for fictionally shooting someone? I dare you to post this.
October 8th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
I bet you understand the difference between a fictional character and the not? I guess you know who is Teri Hatcher over Fernando Poe and the KKK? What if Sponge Bob uttered the same line made by Teri, do you think Filipino people would feel the same way? I don’t need to argue on this issue, i know we have different opinions. And this is what pinoyambisyoso.com all about. Speak and be heard.
