The House of Representative demanded an apology from a British Broadcasting Company (BBC) Comedy Show Harry and Paul. The portrayal of a Filipina Domestic Helper in one of the segments of the show was a racist, humiliating and disgusting quoted Akbayan Partylist Representative Risa Hontiveros. It all started when BBC aired Harry and Paul last September 26, 2008.
Hontiveros also asked the Department of Foreign Affairs to file a complaint against the British Government to correct the sickening joke.
It’s different from the Desperate Housewives issue. It’s more vulgar and disturbing. It may not help in molding the image of Filipina working abroad as Domestic Helpers. This has to be corrected.
On the other side, some believed that the skit is purely a comedy show and has no intention to ruin the image of the Filipina Domestic Helpers. In fact, the show is not entirely about insults. Other people are merely overreacting on the issue and think that we are again belittled by the British people.
Honestly, we are just being overly sensitive and we should lighten up sometimes. Hindi yung ginawan lang tayo ng comedy aping-api na tayo. Yan ang tatak Pinoy, we always have the Inaapi feelings towards small issues. Kaya di na natapos-tapos ang Maki Baka at Ipag Laban mode dito sa atin.
Sabi nga nila likas na pikon talaga ang mga Pinoy samantalang kung makapintas tayo at makapanlait sa iba sobra sobra.
Bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag magagalit.

if the show crossed a line, then it’s natural for our representatives to ask for an apology. but you’re right, we need to be wary over acting too quickly. there are, after all, other important things that our legislators could be doing, such as increasing jobs.

hehehe korek ka sa huling sinabi mo..sabi ko nga sa isang komento ko sa isng blog, sa Pinas ako nakakita ng sobra sobrang racism…kitang kita ang puti at itim, ang pangit at maganda, ang bisaya at taga manila, ang bobo at matalino…ang mahirap at mayaman. Sa pinas nga kapag katulong ka sa kahit naman hindi gaanong karangyang pamilya e kailangan pang naka uniporme ka?
Maaring inaamin ko na dati akong aktibista at patuloy na naniniwala na kailangang magkaroon ng pagbabago sa sistema ng pulitika at ekonomiya ng pinas pero natuto akong hindi na patulan yung mga isyu na ginagawa lang sagutin para masabing may sinasabi ang isang tao.

our government has to do more to protect our citizens abroad in way of internal policies — not in terms of banging other people’s tables just to make noise. they’re putting energy on all the useless things.
when sabah decided to crack down on illegals (both indons and pinoys), indonesia was quick to respond for its citizens. pinas only responded after two days of the announcement, and basically just asked malaysia to adopt the pinoys. can you blame malaysia for asking why they should adopt pinoys when pinas does not want to take care of them?

Found you somewhere, and got interested in your post. Anyway, a comedy show is to make the audience laugh and most of time, in the expense of others.
I think that the problem is not the sensitivity of us Pinoys but the effect of those who thinks we are really that cheap.
Yes, the segment may not be offensive to others (which includes me), but the implication to other watchers who know that many Filipino women are leaving the country to work as nannies or maid.
Pero kung si Joey de Leon kaya ang gumawa nito, si Willy lang kaya ang magre-react?

While I find the scene distasteful, I think many of my countrymen are overreacting here. After all, ‘Harry and Paul’ is a comedy show and should not be taken seriously. The show that lampoons everything, even the Queen, their queen.
Hindi naman pwedeng everytime na meron negative about us abroad eh magpo-protesta tayo, demand for an apology! Ano ba yan, baka pagtawanan na talaga tayo pag nagkataon.

kung sa cebuano pa, balos-balos lang. they make fun of us, we make fun of them. sometimes out of ignorance or just a frail attempt at humor. But this is BBC and europe is very sensitive on the issue of racism. They must apologize!
