Phivolcs Raises Tsunami Alerts in the Philippines after 8.3 Chile Earthquake






The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has issued a tsunami alert in over 20 provinces in the Philippines after the magnitude-8.3 quake that hit Chile today, September 17.

According to Phivolcs advisory, coastal communities fronting the Philippine Sea/Pacific Ocean were advised to wait and listen for updates which include the following provinces of:

Batanes Group of Islands, Sorsogon, Cagayan, Northern Samar, Ilocos Norte, Eastern Samar, Isabela, Leyte, Quezon, Southern Leyte, Aurora, Surigao del Norte, Camarines Norte, Surigao del Sur, Camarines Sur, Davao Oriental, Albay, Davao del Sur, Catanduanes and Davao Occidental.

Phivolcs also explained that the 8.3-magnitude earthquake “has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours.”
