Cebu and Bohol Hit by 7.2 Earthquake on October 15 (PHOTOS & VIDEOS)

Manila, Philippines – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Central Visayas on Tuesday, October 15, killing at least 20 people in Cebu and damaging property including historic structures including the Loboc Church.

The major quake struck at 8:12 am, and was centered 2 kilometers southeast of Carmen, Bohol was followed quickly by a second, 5.4 shake and more than 50 other aftershocks.

According to U.S. Geological Survey, the first quake hit 19 miles east/southeast of Tibigan; 25 miles south/southwest of Talibon; and east/northeast of Tagbilaran.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a Pacific-wide tsunami threat.

As of posting time, at least 20 people died in the quake, the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its press conference noon Tuesday. Fifteen were reported from Cebu; 4 in Bohol; and one in Siquijor.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said the following intensities were felt:

Intensity VII – Tagbilaran, Bohol
Intensity VI – Hinigaran, Negros Occidental
Intensity V- Iloilo City; La Carlota
Intensity IV – Masbate City; Roxas City; San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental
Intensity III – Davao City

Other buildings were also damaged including the Gaisano County Mall in Banilad, Cebu Technological University, One Citilink Terminal, Cebu Doctor’s University in Mandaue. A two-storey building near Cebu Technological University reportedly has totally collapsed.
