Benazir Bhutto is Dead

Benazir Bhutto 21 June 1953 – 27 December 2007 was a Pakistani politician. Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state, twice elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. She was sworn in for the first time in 1988 but removed from office 20 months later under orders of then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan on grounds of alleged corruption. In 1993 Bhutto was re-elected but was again removed in 1996 on similar charges, this time by President Farooq Leghari.

Bhutto went into self-imposed exile in Dubai in 1998, where she remained until she returned to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, after reaching an understanding with General Musharraf by which she was granted amnesty and all corruption charges were withdrawn.

She was the eldest child of former premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a Pakistani of Sindhi descent, and Begum Nusrat Bhutto, a Pakistani of Iranian-Kurdish descent. Her paternal grandfather was Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto who came to Larkana Sindh before partition from his native town of Bhatto Kalan which was situated in the Indian state of Haryana.

She was assassinated on December 27, 2007 in a combined suicide bomb attack and shooting during a political rally of the Pakistan Peoples Party in the town of Rawalpindi. Ex-government spokesman Tariq Azim Khan said that, although it appeared that she had been shot, it was unclear whether her wounds had been caused by a shooting or shrapnel from the bomb.

really sad news. nakakalungkot isipin na kapwa muslim pa pumatay sa knya. i remember a quote from one of the reporters. “Islam forbids the killing of civilians, children, WOMEN and the elderly”. What happened was such a cowardly act.

I begin to think that maybe there are attempts to do this kind of thing on Gloria. I shared it with my dad and replied “Si Gloria pag pinalibutan ng mga bantay nia, di na kita. Sa height ba nman nia”. ^_^

    Happy New Year!

Such a tragedy for a brave & courageous woman to be killed in such a dastardly act. What makes her death more tragic is that, more than a popular political figure who could have done something good for her country, she was first and foremost a wife and a mother. My thoughts and prayers for her grief-stricken family.

i was driving to work this morning when i heard it on the radio, and i was sooooooo shocked! to think that me and my Pakistani officemate were just talking about his trip home to Pakistan on vacation and we talked about the ongoing campaign and then this.

i happen to admire this woman, no matter how nasty the corruption charges to their family is, especially the husband. am telling you, hers is like the current person in manila who’s husbang is also always in the corruption limelight. in any case, i seem to believe the other stories that these corruption charges with her may not all be true, who knows. fact is, she is very well adored in pakistan and there’s absolutely no reason for her to die the way she died.
