Philippines Former President Cory Aquino Died at 76

Philippines Former President Cory Aquino died this morning at 76. His son Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. told reporters, “Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m. of cardio-respiratory arrest”.

Aquino is battling against colon cancer for 16 months. Last month she was again admitted in the hospital and just last week the whole nation started praying for her recovery. People started placing yellow ribbon in their cars, homes, schools and even in the internet to show their support for the Former President.

Cory Aquino was the First Female and 11th President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. She led the People Power Revolution in EDSA that toppled Former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Cory Aquino was born on January 25, 1933 into one of the country’s richest families, the Cojuangcos, Aquino grew up in a world of wealth and politics, being the daughter of a three-time congressman. She married Benigno, one of the country’s most promising politicians, and they had four daughters and a son before he was thrown into prison by Marcos and then forced into exile.

Her arch-foe Imelda Marcos, who returned to the Philippines after her husband died in exile, said: “Now that Cory is with the Lord, let us all unite and pray for the Filipino people.”
