Matheus Fernandes, 21 years old, sang Sam Cooke’s “Change Is Gonna Come” on American Idol Season 12 auditions Wednesday night.

He was born in Brazil and moved to the U.S. when he was 12. He said doctors have been unable to explain his height issue, they couldn’t find anything wrong with him — he’s just short. Matheus was a contestant on the first season of Oxygen’s The Glee Project where he placed eighth.

“Growing up was definitely a challenge … it was rough with all the bullying. Lots of tears were shed,” he said.

After his performance, Nicki Minaj said, “We’re looking for a unique, special person and you fit that bill.”

“You hit me in the heart and you brought me to tears, which I am holding back currently. You can sing anything for me,” added Mariah Carey.

Matheus is going to Hollywood with four yeses!
