Born This Way singer Lady Gaga shocked her fans by getting a tattoo inked onto the back of her head live on stage Thursday night, September 13.

According to tattooist Mark Mahoney, the new design: ‘It’s kind of a Renaissance era cherub, a nod to her Italian heritage.’

He also said, ‘Once I got the pattern on, I realised it was just a perfect image for that place on the body. I knew it was going to be fine, just because it seemed to fit so perfectly right there.’

The new tattoo was inked directly in the middle of Gaga’s scalp, in the shaved section of her head. Gaga had the back of her head shaved earlier this week as a tribute to photographer Terry Richardson whose mother passed away.
