One of the most exciting part of beauty pageants that people want to see is the Question and Answer portion. And last night’s Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Beauty Pageant was filled with excitement and fun as well. People love to talk about when someone committed a mistake (is it really a mistake?), especially in the case of Ms. Janina San Miguel. Janina, a 17-year old Mass Communication student from the University of the East “stands out” last night in the Q & A portion of the pageant.

Here’s Janina’s Q&A portion:
Paolo Bediones: Janina, how are you?
Janina San Miguel: Fine.
Paolo Bediones: Alright, so you won two of the major awards – Best in Long Gown, Best in Swimsuit, do you feel any pressure right now?
Janina San Miguel: No, I don’t feel any pressure right now.
Paolo Bediones: Confident! Alright! Please choose a name of the judge.
Paolo Bediones: We have Miss Vivian Tan.
Vivian Tan: Good Evening.
Janina San Miguel: Good Evening.
Vivian Tan: The question is, what role did your family play to you as candidate to Binibining Pilipinas?
Janina San Miguel: Well, my family’s role for me is so important becoz there was the wa- they’re, they was the one who’s …. very… Haha .… Oh I’m so sorry, uhmm …. My pamily .… My pamily .… Oh my god …. Ok, I’m so sorry .… I .… I told you that I’m so confident .… Eto, uhhmm, Wait .… Hahahahaha, uhmmm, Sorry guys becoz this was really my first pageant ever becoz I’m only 17 years old and ahahaha I, I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of the tough 10. Hmmm, so .… but I said that my family es the most important persons in my life. Thank you.
Here’s the video and watch it:
Janina hailed as the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 World and won the Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown. Read more at Jessie’s article of Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Beauty Pageant.
So age does really matter? Being 17 years old is no excuse at all. We know several winners of the pageant who possessed the traits of a perfect beauty queen. Beauty and brains. Other candidates speak English well, but how many of them who got the title? So what if they speak in Filipino? So what if they bring their own translator like Venezuela, China and Japan. One problem i noticed in last night’s contest, candidates didn’t answer well the questions. They just keep on repeating the questions. I don’t know why the Bb. Pilipinas 2008 organizers didn’t even carefully screen all the candidates before stepping on the big stage. The over-all pageant from the production up to the candidates was a big dismay. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed while waiting for Janina’s competition in Ms. World 2008. Who knows?
Speaking of women, don’t you know it’s International Woman’s Day yesterday? So I am taking this opportunity to thank all the women in my life.

i agree with all of your comments regarding janina… baka isinusumpa na sya ng mga ka-schoolmates nya sa UE… but you know what, ang dapat sisihin dyan eh yung ibang mga judges… bakit ba kasi naging judge tong si dennis trillo at marian rivera? di ba si marian mismo e pinupulaan sa marimar dahil di sya mahusay magbigkas ng english?
grabe k naman sila lang b ang hurado alam mo part yan ng contest any one knows naman diba n nobodies perfect pati c idol marian dinamy mo p bkit ikaw kaya baka Q and A lang d k n makarating kung c idol ang nilagay dyan naku ganda palang no match n…. any way yan naman eh nasa isip lang natin….sorry
The judges should be held accountable for their poor choice! Better yet, boycott the pageant next time until they show signs of better judgment. Or….. they should probably do it like Big Brother or Survivor series….. LET THE VIEWERS CALL IN THEIR VOTES TO DECIDE THE WINNER. Don’t you agree it’s a better alternative? Would be nice if the sponsors pressure the organizers next time to do it this way.
Beauty contests winners are for contestants who are already ripe to represent our country with dignity and pride, not as a jumping board for half-cooked aspirants. So all those dismayed by Janine’s language skills in answering a very simple question that does not require one to be a genius or a rich kid, can’t have room for expecting less. It’s not the right forum for mercy, charity, or understanding since this is a contest for the best representatives to have a decent shot at winning. I can imagine it’s specially disgusting for all those Filipina women who strive to be living examples of the anti-stereotypes to the brainless beauties.
As one comment posted here said, if beauty contests were, as some others argue, just for beauty, then there’s no need for interviews and Q & A portions. But there are and so it’s a disrespect to our women not to grow away from the old tradition of beauty contests that focus only/mainly on one’s appearance.
My father came from public schools until it was time to study law in Manila. But that was not a deterrent at all for him to hone his English. What matters is, public schools or not, what you do in your own private time to improve your language skills is your main responsibility and not to be blamed on anything/anyone else.
The epitome of a Filipina Bimbo! And to think she studied in U.E. which is located at the heart of the university belt and not from some remote boondocks in the province. Better to have answered in Tagalog rather than to assume she can answer in English and fail miserably. Beautywise, she’s not even all that. For one, she’s got a flat ass and no hips to lend womanly curves to her bikini. 6 mos. left is too tall an order to expect her to overcome her non-existent decent command of the English language. Take an interpreter with you Janine and answer in our native language instead. I don’t remember hearing even Melanie Marquez speak that bad!
Overconfidence can really kill ya! It really bites back doesn’t it? 17 year old contestant, when you think about it, she should be able to answer it well considering that they’re prescreened before the pageant. I have one word for you, Janina –> “IDIOT!”
Perhaps you need to brush up on your ABCs and nursery rhymes like “See Bantay Bark.” “See Pedro run.” Lalo na sa Miss. World, iba ang accent ng mga tao — if she can’t answer simple English, how can she compete outside of the country and answer sensibly to the questions?
ambo hugot muna yan.ahehehehe

She was picked to be the champion to represent our country, so it is now up to the pageant committee to get Janina ready for the miss world pageant. She really has the potential to bring home the crown. She already has 2 out of 3 main ingredients to pull it off. She’s beautiful and confident/gracious of character. Intelligence (or the quality to be able to express oneself) can be learned with an excellent coach guiding her. There is still enough time to accomplish this… it’s not mission impossible. Her inability to articulate in the English language is a direct product of the Phil public school system…that’s not her fault. I agree that she should have answered in Tagalog but then the question was in English…that’s why she tried her best to answer it in English (which as everyone saw was a disaster.) Unlike other contestants who had private school education (but still failed miserably to impress me), Janina had to make the best of what her family can afford, and that is public school. Yes, she was a freshman mass comm. student at UE for a semester because she knows she has to improve her communication skills. Maybe more details of her background is needed by the public for them to be able to come up with a fair assesment of her. Until then, all the negative write-ups she’s been getting are all out-of-line and unfair. I just hope people will know more about her and give her their support, and that she hasn’t lost her confidence because of all the negative publicity. GO Janina… make us proud… prove to us that you deserve to represent the Philippines.
David, so far, yours is the best assessment of this brouhaha, I think. Fair and not judgmental. I saw the vid clip of the Q and A portion. Strange, though, I did not see anything funny about some young girl (who was obviously very nervous)trying her darndest to articulate her thoughts. Those judges might have seen the potential in her. And I know for a fact that the pageant people work the candidates’ butts off in training.
Kulang lang sa exposure ang batang ito. And to look that way at 17? She is hot, man. Well, anyway, I’m sure a lot of intelligent scientists and genius geeks cannot communicate fluently in a foreign tongue as well. So maybe, just maybe, good articulation should not be a gauge of smarts?
And I don’t think the judges for the international competition will give a flying shit whether we are an English-speaking country or not. Actually, it’s nothing to be proud of because we adopted a foreign language instead of developing our own. The true nationalists do not only love their country. They also love their language and are damn proud of it.
Beauty contests are not the proper forums for pity of underpriveleged contestants. They’re there to be judged for their appearance and skills in expressing themselves… REGARDLESS of the language they use to accomplish this.
So in reference to the comments of Ella, I’d just like to point out that beauty pageants are like live tv shows…. YOU DON’T GET TO DO RETAKES NOR HAVE THE LUXURY OF SECOND CHANCES on stage, once the show starts to roll. So unless we want skeptics and critics of our people to have one more thing to ridicule us with… again….then we can just continue to send badly unprepared and dismally ill-equipped contestants who are not ready to do the job with one take only.
Asa many of the commentators here have pointed out….. it would have been more face-saving… more dignified and savvy of her if she answered the question in Tagalog. And by the way, her problem is not mere articulation deficiencies but also comprehension skills since the answer did not address the question by a long shot.
ano na yan ambo, pareho pa tayo ng topic. he he.

sana nagtagalog na lang.. teka bawal ba magtagalog ? masakit sa tenga ung sagot e sana nagtagalog na lang but in fairness with Janina she’s so damn freti…bow..

malayo pa naman ang miss world so pwede pa syang mag-aral.
considering her guts and all the negative comments she’s getting right now, i bet she won’t back down but instead, she’ll strive hard to win the miss world title.
sana ma-surprise ako sa october.
The show was more hilarious than America’s Funniest Home videos. was it real? or just a well rehearsed stand up comedic act?
Perhaps the funniest show with the most advertisements not to mention the stupid dance numbers and annoying dumbass host (paolo).
A portion…. kawawa nman tau…. we will represent a “BOBO PHILIPPINES” in the MS. WORLD…
Kaya nga di tayo makakuha ng major titles, if i know that’s a money contest huh!
hahahaha…i supposed to be proud of her, but …. in a way, nakakabilib dn, hahaha…. gudluck sa ms. world pageant…..
Ambo,
You shud understand dat I’m only 17 year olds… and dis is my pers taym to join a byuti pagent. Getz mo??? JANINA

wag gawin dahilan ang age.. its not a valid reason.. nakakiyang alibi..
My God. I can’t believe Janina is a Mass Comm student in college. My 7 year old nephew knows when to use “was” vs. “were”, and “is” vs. “are.” If after studying at least 10 yrs of English (at least 6 years in grade school and 4 years in high school), you still don’t know when to use “was” vs. “were”, I doubt if any type of English coaching for the few months before the Ms. World will do her any good.
I’d rather recommend INDAY to answer her question!
I felt so sorry for her school! Mass COm pa naman course nya!
Well, she doesn’t deserve the title! That’s how crap the pageant is!
Obnoxious Queer here!
Obnoxious Queer’s last blog post..Bb. Pilipinas 2008 SUCKS!!!
naku i have to agree with you, i don’t think she deserved it either. for me kasi more than just the face and the body, beauty should also include having the smarts. diba?
i pretty agree with the both of you guys.
It’s bad enough that one’s personal choice often doesn’t even reach the semi-finals. But for the worst to win …..
