Philippines is First in Save the Children Rankings

The Philippines tops a Save the Children report card in terms of providing basic health care to children.

The country ranked first among 55 developing countries in its yearly State of the World’s Mothers report, as the U-S based organization saw good progress in the country’s efforts to improve health care for children.

However, while the overall ranking of the country was high, Save the Children noted a wide disparity between rich and poor children as recipients of health care.

In the rankings, the Philippines was followed by Peru, South Africa and Indonesia/ Turkmenistan (tied).

Ethiopia was at the bottom of the list with 84 percent of its children having these basic health needs unmet. Also at the bottom were Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Yemen, Chad and Somalia.

Save the Children
defines basic health care as a package of lifesaving interventions that includes prenatal care, skilled care at childbirth, immunizations and treatment for diarrhea and pneumonia.

“The Philippines is making good progress in improving health care for children and has achieved a 48 percent reduction in its under-5 death rate since 1990,” the report said.

In terms of newborn mortality rates, the Philippines has one of the lowest in the developing world with an average of 15 out of 1,000 live births.

“Sixty percent of births in the Philippines are assisted by trained personnel, but the disparity between rich and poor is wide, with 92 percent of births among the wealthiest assisted by skilled health professionals, compared to 25 percent among the poorest,” the report stated.

It noted that nearly half or 46 percent of the poorest children under 5 in the Philippines do not get health care when they need it and that a poor child is 3.2 times more likely than a rich child to die before reaching age 5.

“The Philippines could save many more children’s lives by targeting health care to the poor,” according to Save the Children.

The report said that if all children survived at the same rate as the wealthiest children, 35 percent of the Philippines’ under-5 deaths could be averted.

“That means 26,000 Philippine children would be saved each year,” the organization said.

The 55 countries included in the report card account for nearly 60 percent of the world’s under-5 population and 83 percent of all child deaths worldwide.

Black Suede Video

The 30-year old man from Cebu was shocked when he learned that his rectum operation at Vicente Sotto Hospital Cebu is circulating in Youtube. The video was named Black Suede Scandal.

It all happened last December 31, 2007 in Cebu when the man had casual sex with a stranger who offered P100.00 in return. The man said he was drunk and brought the stranger home - had sexual intercourse with him. They had a second intercourse and by this time using a Black Suede Spray cologne found inside his room. He said no then he fell asleep.

When he woke up he learned the man left his house already. He started to get scared when he remembered what the man last told him and when he could no longer find his body spray because he felt something painful inside his body. Even more painful when he tried to urinate.

On January 2, 2008 he went to his family and he was brought to the hospital. The doctors said they found a foreign object in his body that requires an operation. The following day before the operation, he complained that there were too many people inside the operating room, but his complain was a bit late because the anesthesia was already administered in his body.

He thought his shameful experience ended up. Two weeks after, he went back to the hospital for a copy of his medical records and the doctor disclosed that they video taped the whole operation. He was asked for a copy, but he said no and begged the doctor to keep it confidential instead.

Two months after, he was surprised when a concerned citizen in the neighborhood showed him the video of his operation. Though his face was not seen on the video, it was clear that his Right to Privacy was violated because some his friends knew it was him. What’s your stand on this issue?

Watch the video before you make a comment. Black Suede Video Scandal

Philippines Ranks No. 1 in Friendster

According to the article of Rene Martel of Manila Times, “Philippines ranks No. 1 among top 5 of users - Malaysia, Indonesia, USA and Singapore”. It only shows that Philippines is one of the friendliest countries around the globe.

Facts:
Friendster - which first saw life in 2002 as a “social experiment” on the part of its Californian founder Jonathan Abrams who was having problems getting up close and personal on an on-line dating site.”

“attracted $13 million in private funding in 2006, first operated out of the San Francisco Bay Area where many Filipinos live. Roberto pinpoints this as a possible reason why Friendster.com is so phenomenally popular in the Philippines.”

I myself was registered almost 4 years ago and everyone in the family has its own account. As well as relatives and friends. Friendster is simply an amazing website. Chances of looking your old friend, classmate, relative is no impossible at Friendster.com

What I really love about Friendster is it’s birthday alarm. Whew, I really appreciate it. I am not damn good in remembering birthdays. Sorry friends and thanks Friendster.

With an estimate of 7 Million Filipino users of Friendster – which includes fake accounts, double accounts only implies good contribution rate.

Well, the saga continues.
