Difference of Dial-up and ADSL?

What’s the difference of Dial-up and ADSL? Which type of internet connection do you prefer? Dial-up, ADSL or DSL?

As the technology is concern, internet service in the Philippines has tremendously affect by the modern technology. From Dial-up to DSL connection. Do you remember your countless nights patiently using Dial-up service? ADSL or DSL nowadays has become a trend for its Comcast High Speed Access.

Let’s first define each.

ADSL requires a connection at the telephone exchange. Commonly paying a connection fee and signing up for a year contract with an ISP. You will need an ADSL Modem box and it is usually provided as part of your contract.

These days the ADSL box provided will often be a Wireless Router, so you connect it to your PC via wireless not by cable. For example Linksys.

Dial-up means what it says. You just connect the phone cable directly at the back of your computer and use it to dial-up an ISP. There is no contract on this service. Pay phone charges, which can be as low as two peso per minute or you can use a pre-paid cards that is available everywhere.

Dial-up is about 10x slower than ADSL and ADSL is 10x or more faster than Dial-up. Of course quite expensive.

Hope this post could help you find the difference of Dial-up and ADSL.
